Field Scientists for Water Management Project
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry and the Environment invites applications to the post of Field Scientist for the Water Resource Management Project. This project is funded by the European Union (STABEX Funds) and the Government of St. Lucia. Relationships and responsibilities: To work under the direction of and report to the Project Coordinator of the Water Resource Management Project. Duties and Tasks: The specific duties of the Field Scientist are: 1. Deploy instruments and collect samples for the analysis of hydrological processes. Specific tasks include: * Deployment and maintenance of watershed hydrological monitoring equipment including data retrieval. * Sediments sampling and coordination of analysis with selected laboratories. * River profile measurements and watershed and marine surveys. 2. Assist in data analysis and the integration of environmental quality data collection with other data collection programmes. This will include measurements of water and sediment quality. 3. Assist in the establishment of a comprehensive network of hydrometeorology stations to be installed around the island, to provide information related to crop irrigation and drainage requirements. 4. Assist in the management, control and rehabilitation within critical drainage basins. Specific tasks include: * Identification of the catchment areas within the major drainage basins deemed crucial for water management. * With the aid of computer-assisted mapping and analytical tools (GIS), develop broad-based management plans and recommendations for the management and rehabilitation of critical drainage basins. * In the context of irrigation, assist in the development of plans which would suggest the nature of required infrastructure, the extractions and delivery systems and the clusters of holdings that can be irrigated within single systems. 5. Assist in public sensitisation on Water Resource Management issues. 6. Assist in enforcing environmental quality standards. 7. Assist in managing and updating the Water Resource Management Unit information system database. 8. Assist in training the local community or farmer-based water catchment groups in Water Resource Management Processes. 9. Directly supervise and assess staff under the Field Scientist's supervision. 10.
