Samuels, who remained to the end after 248 minutes, faced 165 balls in an innings laced with eight fours. Windwards pacer Fernix Thomas ended with five for 53.

Ewan, WU On Two-Game Win Streak
(9 January 2001) - The Washburn University Ichabods basketball team earned a tight victory Monday night, their ninth win for 2000-2001, 75-73 over Truman State. WU was trailing by six points in the DII contest with just under five minutes to play, but a six-point outburst including a layup from St. Lucian forward Ewan Auguste gave them victory. Washburn also needed to make 5 of 6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to pull out this two-point home win. Auguste ended with 12 points and 7 rebounds in 27 minutes. Auguste tallied 14 points in 23 minutes on Saturday evening, the second high scorer for his team as the Washburn University Ichabods returned to winning ways against Southwest Baptist, whom they handed an 88-59 drubbing. After the game Ewan applauded WU's defensive effort.

Windwards On Pace For Opening Win
(7 January 2001) - Windward Islands had defending champions Jamaica on the ropes when the penultimate day of the opening round regional Busta Cup cricket match ended at Sabina Park Sunday. Set a victory target of 183, Jamaica were tottering at 34 for five when bad light ended play at 5:23 pm with 12.4 overs remaining. The home side, facing an uphill task, needed another 149 runs with five wickets in hand. In a low scoring match, Windwards 168 and 189, Jamaica 175 and 34 for five. In the second innings, St. Lucia's John Eugene was third high scorer (23) for the sub-regional side. At close, skipper Robert Samuels was on three and wicketkeeper Hibbert yet to get off the mark. So far, Thomas has impressive figures of four for 16 from eight overs, including three maidens.

Ring In The New
(5 January 2001) - 25-year-old Mon Repos middle distance runner Zepherinus 'Knockay' Joseph - the fastest St. Lucian ever over 1500m and 5000m - proved his credentials once again last weekend. A junior at University of North Florida, Zepherinus is preparing for his first-ever Division II track and field season, after transferring from Central Arizona College last year. His latest outing was New Year's Eve at the 20th annual Toyota Gator Bowl 5K in Jacksonville, an event he won in 15:04 from a field of both seasoned and amateur runners. Though Zepherinus' official national record for the men's 5K is 15:01 his fastest recorded 5K time is 14:43, competing March, 1999 at the Baldy Castillo Distance Carnival in Tempe, Arizona. Last November he became Division II South Region cross-country champion, having won the junior college national 10K title earlier in the year while at Central Arizona.

Ewan Almost Perfect In WU Loss
(4 January 2001) - Less than five days after a perfect shooting night, St. Lucian forward/centre Ewan Auguste led the Washburn University Ichabods basketball team with 19 points on Wednesday evening, missing just once from nine field goal attempts. But WU, in their first conference match-up for the 2000-01 season, lost to top-ranked Missouri Southern 83-73. Washburn's season record is now seven wins and two losses. Ewan is the most efficient scorer for the Ichabods this season, converting more than half his field goal attempts. Last year he made the Division II All-American second team after leading his team in scoring and rebounding.

Eugene, Windwards Off To JA
(3 January 2001) - Gros Islet and St. Lucia middle order batsman John Eugene, 30 years old, is off to Jamaica this weekend as a member of the Windward Islands team that will open its 2001 Busta Cup first class cricket campaign with great expectations. Last year, with Eugene, teenager Rommel Currency and former skipper Junior Murray their leading batsmen, Windwards won the regional limited overs title, the Red Stripe Bowl, defeating the Leeward Islands in the final. Earlier the Windwards under-nineteen team won the regional youth tournament in Guyana. Three players from that team are in the Busta Cup squad. The Windwards, led by allrounder Rawl Lewis, will be without pacers Nixon McLean and Cameron Cuffy, both on tour with the West Indies in Australia, and allrounder Roy Marshall, who faced a disciplinary tribunal last week. They'll still have good bowling, but now the batsmen, including Eugene, must step up. A less-than-stellar performance for St. Lucia in the sub-regional four-day contest notwithstanding, Eugene had a great year with the bat. His record run-scoring earned Gros Islet consecutive national crowns, and he had an unbeaten 130 against South Africa A during their Caribbean tour.

Ewan Is Doing Just Fine, Says Coach (reproduced from the Topeka Capital-Journal)
(3 January 2000) - It's not unusual for Washburn to run a play designed for Ewan Auguste to score. After all, the 23-year-old St. Lucian forward was a second-team All-American and Most Valuable Player in the MIAA last season. But one play run for Auguste on Saturday against Benedictine was rare. The 6-foot-8 senior center made the first 3-point basket of his career with just under four minutes remaining in the Ichabods' 88-63 victory over the Ravens at Lee Arena. "In the pregame shootaround, I asked coach (Bob Chipman) if I could shoot a 3," Auguste said. "He said I could if we got up by 30." A free throw by Troy Douglas with 4:33 to play gave the Ichabods an 83-53 lead. "I was on the bench and I went down and said, 'Coach, are going to run that play?' " Auguste said. "He said OK, but I'd only get one shot." That's all he needed. Auguste launched the ball from the top of the free-throw circle and touched nothing but net, giving the Ichabods an 86-54 lead. It was the third career 3-point shot by Auguste, who missed both attempts last season. "I was betting the guys on the bench that he wouldn't hit the rim, but it was pure," Chipman said. Auguste finished with 18 points and eight rebounds as the No. 17 Ichabods concluded non-conference play with a 7-1 record. That boosted his season averages to 14.0 points and 6.5 rebounds. Solid numbers, for sure, but below the 16.9 points and 7.8 boards he put up last season. No cause for concern, though. "I think Ewan is doing a good job ... a great job," Chipman said. "If people think he's not playing well it's my fault because he's doing exactly what I'm asking him to do. "He's not shooting the ball as much as he did during the end of our season last year. If you look at pre-conference last year I don't think he set the world on fire, either. He seems to pick it up as the year goes on and against the better teams. We're counting on him to do that." In eight non-conference games last season, Auguste averaged 16.0 points and 7.8 rebounds. In the 18 MIAA games, his scoring was up to 17.3 and his rebounding steady at 7.6 a game. Auguste is satisfied with his performance thus far, especially with Eric Carter, Randolph Williams and Ryan Murphy providing plenty of offensive punch. But Auguste often is the first option in WU's scheme and he expects to take his game up a notch or two as the Ichabods open conference play at defending champion Missouri Southern on Wednesday. "I've been taking my time, but I'm a senior so after this year I have nothing left here so I have to leave it all out there on the court," Auguste said. "I think I'm doing what I need to do. The numbers are not as good, but that takes time. I'm seeing double-teams all the time and it is difficult to adjust to that. I'm taking my time and working my way through it and hopefully we'll see things pick up."
