Comfort, space, soft cooling breezes and beautiful natural views of the Savannes Bay wetlands and the Atlantic Ocean: these are the hallmarks of this great family residence on the south-east coast of St Lucia. Close to town, close to the beach, not far off the main road - yet completely tucked away on a small cul-de-sac on the edge of a high-end residential neighbourhood and surrounded by bright flowering bougainvillea, ficus hedges, ginger lilies, palm trees, and white cedar and mango trees, this is your perfect tropical hideaway. Designed and built by people who have spent all their lives living in tropical surroundings, this house (named 'Savannah Breeze') has brought together the best of it all.
High cathedral ceilings and an open plan living, dining and kitchen are combined with tall, louvred windows that reach all the way down to floor level. This ensures that the north-eastern trade wind - for which this part of the island is rightly famous - passes unhindered through every part of the house, creating the kind of free, natural air-conditioning that is the hallmark of every well-designed tropical home. French doors open out onto a large oceanview balcony that is fitted out with a bar. No doubt many a tall tale has been told here at family gatherings and impromptu parties with friends! There is a large powder room for guests here, while a hallway off the living area leads to three bedrooms: a master bedroom with a large ensuite bathroom and walk-in closet, as well as two junior bedrooms with a shared bathroom. Below the main house is a finished basement apartment with a toilet and shower, which is currently used as a gym. In front of this, opening out onto the gardens, is a large wooden deck which is perfect for full-moon parties and other get-togethers. Seen from all levels of the house, the sea views are a cut above your usual 'blue sky/blue sea' variety, as this home overlooks the internationally ratified wetlands of Savannes Bay, with tiny Scorpion Island and the distinctive headland of Pointe de Caille in the distance. In pre-Columbian days, this was one of St Lucia's most important Amerindian settlements. A band of coral reefs half a mile offshore protects this side of St Lucia from the heavy wave action of the Atlantic Ocean, thus creating a rich, fertile and, above all, beautiful natural habitat for humans, flora and fauna alike. The house is set well above sea level, on the inland side of the Vieux Fort-Castries Highway and sits on solid, rocky ground.
The house was built in the year 2000 and has always been meticulously maintained. It sits on 32,002 sq ft of landscaped grounds, with mature trees, flowering bushes and good drainage all in place. There is an access road that leads to the back of the house as well as a cul-de-sac road at the bottom of the garden with pedestrian access. The house offers 4,140 sq ft of living space, with an additional 476 sq ft of wooden deck for recreational purposes.
