This is a beautiful old-style, solidly built family home with panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, Laborie bay and on clear days, the neigbhbouring island of St Vincent. Immediately across the road from the house, a track leads to a sandy beach and the gentle shores of the Caribbean Sea. The house was built in the 1970s (along with about 4 others) by a retired Scotsman in an area known as Sapphire estate, just west of the quaint fishing village of Laborie, on the south coast of St Lucia (8 minutes' drive from Vieux Fort and Hewanorra International Airport). Sapphire House sits on three-quarters of an acre of land (appr. 30,000 sq ft), which is fully fenced. The land slopes up from the road, and the main house is built on 2 levels, with a basement below. The basement houses a 1-bedroom apartment with a living room, bedroom and ensuite bathroom. French doors lead into the garden from here and there are nice sea views even from the basement living room! The main house is accessed from the ground level also, via a private, concrete driveway bordered by mature fern palms, coconuts and bougainvillea which picturesquely frame both the house and the splendid sea view. On entering the house through the light and open living area, the 180-degree sea view immediately commands all attention. Glass sliding doors give onto to a spacious outdoor balcony. Shaded by natural vegetation and cooled by lovely north-easterly breezes, this is undeniably the place to relax. The sight of the sparkling blue Caribbean Sea beyond a fringe of green palms combines with the comforting rumble of waves breaking on the coral reefs out in Laborie Bay. To the north-east, a small peninsula breaks the seaview momentarily, only to open up again to more eye-filling distant blues and whites, with the high blue Caribbean skies above. To the south, one just glances the colourful fishing boats tied up in Laborie Bay. Back inside, the living room curves around a central staircase built of natural stone and dark wood, and enters the dining and open kitchen. White tiles combined with dark wood, natural stone walls and recessed lighting give this a very clean yet classic look: a haven of homeliness after the bright sunlight outside. Also on the ground floor of the main house is a guest bathroom with wc, sink and a sunken shower built of natural stone. At the rear of the house, the kitchen opens out onto a sheltered laundry area, while French doors in the dining room give onto to a large garden on the south-side of the house. Mature mango trees, avocado, frangipani, limes, golden apple, papaya, breadfruit and coconut trees cast their shade over the neatly-mown lawn. The central wooden staircase that separates the living room from the kitchen leads up to the second floor of the house. Fully renovated, with dark wooden floors and clean white walls, this houses the master bedroom with its large, ensuite bathroom; a second large bedroom with ensuite bathroom, and a smaller guestroom with twin beds, again with its own (small) ensuite bathroom. All three bedrooms are airconditioned. The master bedroom and the large guest bedroom both open out onto a sea-side verandah, boasting yet more spectacular sea views. The house was renovated in 2005 and although there remains some minor work to be done in the basement apartment, this is a wonderful and spacious seaside, turn-key holiday or retirement home. All amenities are in place: mains electricity, water, cable TV and internet. There are back-up water tanks, a solar hot water system, and large cisterns for collecting rain water both underneath the house (behind the basement apartment) and outside. The roof was replaced in 2005, as were all the doors and windows, tiles, kitchen and bathroom appliances. The garden is mature yet well-kept, and there is ample space for a swimming pool. A flagstone patio leads around the house and into the terraced garden. The solid concrete entrance driveway is shared with a neighbouring house. All drainage and retaining walls are well-positioned.
