Community

St. Lucia has a strong tradition of charitable societies and community-oriented organisations. Originally, many of these were called 'Friendly Societies', whose object was "to relieve members in sickness and to provide funeral expenses at death". The names of some were strongly indicative of the need for social togetherness during times of economic hardship - the 1925 Blue Book of Statistics, for example, mentions "The St. Lucia Morning Star Benevolent Society", "The Hand of Fellowship" and "The Negroes Progressive Association". Times may have changed, but the all-human need for occasional help, assistance, support or comfort remains the same...
